Ringing in the New Year (For Real)

asian art museum

Looking for a more spiritual way to ring in the New Year? Head to the Asian Art Museum, one of San Francisco's best museums, for the 29th Japanese New Year's Bell-Ringing Ceremony, a contemplative event highlighted by a chance to strike the museum's ancient 2,100-pound Japanese bronze bell. This more cerebral New Year's Eve experience includes a purification ritual and charting of the Buddhist Heart Sutra, plus opening remarks about the Japanese New Year by Yoshie Akiba (founder of the Yoshi's jazz club). It's said that by ringing the bell, you leave behind any negative experiences, bad luck or evil deeds. The 11:30 am - 2:30 pm event is free with museum admission.

Address: 200 Larkin Street, San Francisco
