Amusements of Another Era
Before video games and vines, amusements involved a generous dose of mechanical magic. At Pier 45's Musée Mécanique, San Francisco has a home for a bygone era of games that whirr, buzz, tick and beep. It's an antique coin-operated arcade full of all kinds of strange and very cool mechanical wonders. Hear music from a 100-year-old mechanical band, play old boardwalk games and have your fortune told by a creepy gypsy automaton. This is a taste of the old-fashioned whimsy of the waterfront, collected over a lifetime. Located on Pier 45, this museum-arcade hybrid is open 365 days a year, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm (8:00 pm on weekends). Admission is free.
